Abstract:
Women with diabetes mellitus (DM) in pregnancy may experience unique
breastfeeding challenges, including delayed onset of lactogenesis II and neonatal hypoglycemia. There is evidence that routine, non-medically indicated formula supplementation may be provided in hospital to overcome these challenges. A policy directing supplemental feeding practices for breastfeeding children was introduced at a tertiary level health centre providing services for women and children to promote evidence-based practice.
